Being married into the armed forces , teaches us a whole bunch of things. From fixing a flat Tyre to hosting a party for 10 at an hour's notice , we have done it all. One of the many problems that we encounter as mothers, is the constantly changing schools for our children. Postings do not always come at academic year end. More times than most we are required to relocate in the middle of the term or even at the end of the term. This requires the fauji wives to be excellent teachers who can home school their children when ever there is a need. We are well versed with all the topics across State boards / CBSE and ISCS boards of education. So no matter where the posting is, or how good/ bad the schools are , we are well equipped to teach our children.
One one such occasion , my son who is in class 2 was having some difficulty in understanding Homophones. Homophones are the words that sound the same but have different spellings. Like 'Here' and 'Hear'. I devised a trick to better understand such words. I made flash cards with the homophones written on them and underlined the differentiating factor. Take a look at the picture below.
1. Here and Hear : The word that has an "Ear" in it is used to listen.
2. There and Their : The word that has 'Here' in it means 'in that place' (Opposite of here is there)
3. Knight and Night : The word that can be rearranged to form King, means Knight as in warrior (Kings have knights )
4. Whole and Hole : Hole is a part of Whole. So Whole is full.
5. Wear and Where : Where has 'here' in its spelling which answers the question where.
6. Made and Maid : Maid has 'aid' in it. A Maid is supposed to or help with the work.
Thus I could teach my son to differentiate and understand some of the homophones !
I hope this helps a few of you out there who I am sure can come up with more such tricks.
